Chicago man survives 40 foot fall from Dan Ryan overpass

Joseph Dunmars 20, of Chicago, was driving on the Dan Ryan expressway when his broken driver's side door of his vehicle flew open. Dunmars was headed home after work and was in the outbound lanes of the Dan Ryan. He tried to close the door and lost control of his vehicle. Veering first to the left and then to the right, Dunmars was thrown from the car over the overpass and into the Union Pacific railroad yard located near 25th and Canal.

According to Illinois State Police, workers in the yard witnessed Dunmars' fall and contacted 911. As of late Tuesday he was listed in stable condition.

Marcel Bright, a spokesman for Stroger Hospital said Dunmars sustained multiple fractures and some internal injuries that may require surgery. It may be days before the full extent of his injuries are known.

According to State Police, Dunmars was sober. No drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.
